Vital Signs: NAAO conference 2007

background & governing principles

History

Founded in 1982, the National Association of Artists’ Organizations was established to provide its constituent organizations and the individual artists and communities they in turn serve with a vehicle for communication and a clear and distinct national voice. Over those 23 years, NAAO has drawn its strength from the more than 600 artists' organizations, arts institutions, artists, and other arts professionals that have comprised its membership base. From its inception NAAO’s constituency has reflected a broad range of aesthetics as well as great diversity in geographic, gender-based, economic and ethnic communities.

NAAO draws its Board of Directors from the ranks of artists and arts leaders from coast to coast.

NAAO represents organizations in all disciplines, including visual, performing, media, literary, and interdisciplinary arts. By engaging artists across the country through the organizations that serve them locally, NAAO serves as a catalyst ensuring the cultural health of our communities.

Vision

NAAO's convening, networking, and advocacy efforts are designed to mobilize the field in a national dialogue.

NAAO provides valuable networking opportunities within the field, promotes the value of artist-driven initiatives to the broader public, and serves as a national voice for artists' organizations in forums that debate issues of cultural policy.

As the only national organization serving the community of artists' organizations, NAAO continues to be a leading force.

NAAO fosters a climate of action, collaboration, mutual support and a dynamic exchange of information and ideas across regions.
